OK, got it. On the more tab, I never see that there’s a firmware update available. I’m on 202. Also I can’t start a recipe from the app.
It seems to connect on Simon’s web tool, but not in the ANOVA app.
Could you advise on the exact sequence of steps you took so I might try to reproduce? i.e. unplug and plug back in, go immediately to more tab in app?
How can I even see the firmware version in the ANOVA iOS app? How would you see which one it’s attempting to install? Do you have any screenshots or could you find a similar one online so I know what to look for?
One more update that might help others. Still waiting to see the results for myself.
I power cycled the oven, then open the ANOVA oven iOS app and immediately went to the more tab. I didn’t yet see the oven there. I force closed the iOS app and opened it again and saw the 208 update there. Then I clicked update. Now the App says firmware is installing.
According to Simon’s advice, I’m thinking maybe I should tap the screen of the oven every so often to keep it awake so I’m doing that every 5 minutes now.
Now the screen saying firmware updating is gone from the iOS app. I can however still see the update now button. Should I do this? Or should I power cycle the oven again and maybe it’s already updated?
How long does it take to install an update?
I’d appreciate some advice on the timing and how long to wait at each step. Or just try the power cycle and then update button in the iOS app once in a while and don’t do any other steps like tapping the screen?
I would hit the button and go around again. As for timing cant really help I’m afraid, I’ve had it swirling away saying “updating” for up to an hour, sometimes it’s 10 mins. Sometimes it just stops and dumps back to the “more” page, other times it displays a message saying its lost contact, wait, retry or contact support. I cant recall how many times I went through this until I eventually noticed it had upgraded one level. The firmware on the oven is the one displayed in the “more screen” where it has the update. When you go into the update screen itself the oven’s firmware is at the top under the heading, the page displays the firmware to be installed and the button to do so.
You said “I would hit the button and go around again.” You mean the button in the app to upgrade firmware, right? My oven screen is still black. What do you mean by “go around again”?
Also curious what you mean about upgrading one level? I see I have 202 and it says I can upgrade to 208. I don’t see an option to go to 207 if that’s what you mean by one level.
OK thats what I meant I had 11_207_1.2.17_ and then several numbers, I cant recall, customer support said I had to install 11_207_1.2.17_00.00.00 - the zeros where previously numbers, I think the one with the numbers bricked the machines and they withdrew it, but dont hold me to that. My oven certainly wasn’t on that. By the method you are using which I did time and time again I got to that version of the firmware but using that method I never got 11_208_1.2.10_01.01.14 to install, tried it and tried it. I used Simon’s tool but I got the authorisation code off the website (you only need this if you are using google to login to anova rather than an email and password).
I got the blue button and hit that - see my previous posts about code etc etc. Last night I hit the blue button again just after midnight then I sat with the machine and tapped the screen every 10 mins. After about 45 mins the display showed the progressing installation (there was no display for the download) of 11_208 etc etc. And the oven rebooted.
tried rebooting and partial reset, no joy so went the full wizard, failed twice, once with error code 154, but eventually it connected. Out of the box I had these problems. It would connect, be OK for 24 hours or so, and then say “no internet”. This time its connected at 5GHz which its never done before, was always on 2.5Ghz. It’s currently about 3 feet from the router, when it’s in the kitchen thats about 10-12 feet. I was about to raise this with Anova when I fell victim to the Blank Screen update.
I’ve been trying the update again since an hour. I’m currently tapping my iphone screen and also the oven screen every 5 minutes. This way the connection is never lost. But I have no idea if the install is actually proceeding or if I’m just wasting my time. What’s the max amount of time that I should keep tapping the phone and oven screens?
If there’s an error and the update stops, how would I know? For all I know it never really started either.
To clarify now I see the screen on my iphone “updating firmware. please do not turn off or unplug your oven while it’s updating." and there’s the spinning wheel next to the word Updating. The oven screen is still black, but looking at it from the side slightly, I can see the LED of the screen is on.
In my experience, the app is unable to update any oven from version 202/207 to 208. It sends an OTA command, but for some reason, the “bricked” oven would not start downloading the firmware, even though the app shows a spinning wheel suggesting it’s doing something.
I strongly recommend using the web tool instead, as it fetches the latest firmware URL and pushes it to the oven, allowing you to send multiple OTA commands until the download actually begins (sometimes I even pushed 10 OTA update commands and then oven eventually updated overnight)
I wish the Anova APIs had a verbose log to track the download progress, however, Anova does not seem to have implemented such a thing.
One way would be to monitor network traffic and see when download actually begins…P.S.
Three tips for you:
Keep the oven awake after clicking the UPDATE button.
Ensure each OTA command is executed (the oven will reply with “OK” after you click on the UPDATE button).
Try using the tool in the evening, as ovens tend to update overnight.
I had an email just now saying that the fault had been identified and that I could now install the new firmware. I’ve asked how I can do that when the app says “oven not found”
My oven still isn’t working. In the middle of last week they offered me a replacement, and I accepted. Then on Thursday they asked me if it had updated correctly. I said it hadn’t, and asked when I would receive a replacement. I haven’t heard anything further.
they told me no replacement, they would only do a refund. They said they wouldn’t replace it because it might happen again. I pointed them in the direction of their release saying they had pulled the offending update so how could it, they ignored that. They have very “selective” reading habits on emails I noticed.
I’m seeing another firmware update 11_209_1.2.17.01 in the app, “update now”; no chance pal, I will be keeping an eye on reddit and this forum, anyone know if it waits for you to push the button or takes matters into its own hands?
I started a survey on Reddit. I would be interested in how many people are still affected and where the update worked. If You have a little bit time, I would appreciate if You participate.
