There seems to be a fix. Official support document:
I had no success with this last night, trying again tonight though
Something better?
Hi y’all, after the third night, the miracle happened and the oven is back.
Some remarks:
- no need to keep any tool open or send to it any message (no need to press update in the mobile app either)
- apply exactly the solution with the alu foil described by the Anova team in the Official blog post
- download started at 3am sharp local time, took 30 mins
- after that, in the morning (around 5:30h) the screen was showing the clock
- all needed is to keep it stable/connected the whole day/night
- ensure for the whole day that doesn’t disconnect from the wifi, go full black screen with no backlight or displays app not responding. If that happens, unstick the Alu foil, power cycle it, re-stick the foil. Follow carefully the guide in the blogpost, foil touch on screen needs to be in the Right Corner and of the size of a thumb, not more/not too wide, not on other part of the screen
- no need to reset it before 1am local time or anything like that
- do not lose hope and if you succeed to keep it permanently alive you also don’t need to baby sit it, give it some days and nights.
What I exactly did:
Yesterday I set it up in the morning (power cycle and attach tin foil) and went to the office. When I came back it was still alive, no error on the panel, and back lit, connectable from the app and constant network communication. I did not touch it till this morning when it was back from the dead.
Now probably I put it behind a firewall at least at night and will not update FW excepting after looking on forums first.
Thanks everyone and wishing you a great day!
PS: Kudos to the HW Engineers from Anova for the tin foil solution and to the Android SW engineers: in the future please do not force push to master Friday evening before going for the weekend
Mine came back to life too, I did the same thing, left it plugged in with the tinfoil trick, didn’t try the app or tool at all, back to normal this morning!
Not for me, oven was still dead this morning, last night it showed the Anova Onboard App is not responding message around midnight, so i unplugged and did it again with the foil and the message was not triggered, its now 6am and the oven is still dead.
simonepsp is your tool supposed to be used like at night, because I’m trying to use it in the morning and nothing seems to be happening
Seeing as I started this thread, I had better finish it
I’ve been out of town for two weeks so I’ve only just had a chance to try out the tin foil hack. It took me about four attempts yesterday with different thicknesses of foil to get the oven to stay on and connected for more than 30 minutes. Eventually I got there and I left the oven on overnight last night.
This morning: success! the oven UI had a clock, and it now works properly. The UI shows I’m on the latest firmware. So I guess the foil hack works, and thankfully I do not have to return my oven (which is apparently mandatory for us here in Canada - do ask, as I was properly annoyed by that)
I do have another issue, which I have worked around. I was unable to get my oven to connect to my app, but I think it’s related to WPA3 security on my Eero Wifi Router.
Anyway, after 4 weeks with a bricked oven, I now have my (kitchen) right hand back.
