First gen Precision Cooker (Wifi) apparantly connected, but not showing up in the app

I received a 1st gen APC from a friend of mine.

After registration, I downloaded the Android app to my Sony phone. After the registration, I selected the “Precision Cooker Bluetooth or Wi-Fi” from the list of devices (which is the only one looking at the image precisely as my device, and it is the device anyway, to my best knowledge). After filling in my 2.4G Wifi details, I get a “Connected” message and also a beep sound from the device, however it doesn’t show up in the app. If I go to settings > My devices, the list is empty. If I click to make a recipe, I get to the pairing screen’s device selection again.
I checked for some common errors:

  • I tried to hold the wifi sign for a few seconds, then unplugged the device for a minute and started over
  • reinstalled the app
  • made sure my Wifi SSID and password don’t have any special characters
  • moved really closed to the router
  • connected my phone to the same 2.4G network
  • I also tried to set it up on an older Samsung tablet with older Android, but the same thing happened

In the meantime, after the connection is established, I see the device showing up on my router’s device list and there’s even some 100-200 bytes up and down traffic, so the device seems to be connected, I assume that it’s an issue with the Anova app.

Did anyone else experience a similar issue? Or might this be related to a fact that I read in another topic that Anova wants to cut off support for older devices? (but then I’m wondering, why the device still shows up as an option on the pairing screen).

I do believe it is related to Anova turning off Bluetooth/Wi-Fi except for subscription payers. I too see the device communicating with my iPhone (the phone asks if the device I want to pair to is the one displaying such and such a temperature), and yet it won’t fully pair to the app. So now, the app is essentially useless. Personally, I can get by without the app.

I was afraid of this. (and it’s so disappointing)
I also subscribed for the two weeks trial, but it also didn’t help.

I can also get away without the app of course, although setting the timer is another total nonsense  But the device itself just works fine, and I got it for free, so I’m not complaining, I was just frustrated.

I also had a first generation which was bluetooth only. I was disappointed that the app functionality went away but TBH the bluetooth functionality didn’t really do much. I upgraded to a pro with the understanding that I’d be grandfathered in to the app without having to pay a subscription fee. The pro is much faster and I do like the WiFi which I can see the status even when not on my home network.
